mucilage cropThe Bennett lab is currently focused on plant-microbe interactions and, specifically, the association of N2 fixing microbes with the extracellular mucilage of cereal crops.  The research started in 2010 with the identification of an indigenous landrace of maize with extensive mucilage secretion and the capacity fix most its nitrogen from the atmosphere.

The Bennett lab previously worked on tomato fruit development for many years and has published extensively in the area of fruit ripening, cell wall disassembly and overall fruit quality.  This area of research is being further developed in the laboratory of Dr. Barbara Blanco.
